Günter Försterra is the scientific coordinator of Huinay Scientific Field Station. In 2009, together with Vreni Häussermann he edited and published the first comprehensive taxonomic field guide of marine benthic invertebrates of Chilean Patagonia, the first marine field guide for multiple groups of organisms in the fjord region. His research topics include benthic invertebrate ecology, especially cold-water corals, fjord regionsand marine protected areas. He was principal investigator of two research projects (Fondecyt, OBIS) including this ongoing project on mortalities of cold-water corals, and co-investigator in seven research projects (Fondecyt, Conicyt and PADI Foundation) dealing with the zoogeography of Chilean Patagonia, and the ecology of cold-water corals, respectively. Günter Försterra has co-authored more than 40 scientific publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals (Marine Biology, Marine Ecology Progress Series, Coral Reefs, Nature, etc), and presented more than 60 talks and posters at national and international conferences. Together with Vreni Häussermann, he has organized and led 31 scientific sampling expeditions with up to 11 scientists to remote areas of Chilean Patagonia. Through his work for the Huinay Foundation he is active in counselling governmental and non-governmental organisations on conservation and proper marine resource management and brings research results not only to the scientific community, but also to decision makers, industry representatives, fishermen and the broader public. In 2006, together with Vreni Häussermann, he developed and submitted a proposal for a marine protected area (MPA) in two fjords with unique cold-water coral banks. In cooperation with colleagues, two NGOs, and the Chilean Ministry of Environment he is carrying out a MARXAN analysis at the moment which will be presented to the Chilean government in 2016. He has contributed to international initiatives such as the Census of Marine Life, the Discover Life program, Mission Blue and Google Ocean. His work is documented in numerous television and newspaper reports, and a travelling exhibition on marine biodiversity of the Chilean fjord region.

PhD THESIS PROYECT

“A novel approach for structural analyses of benthic communities exemplified by Chilean fiords”

Shallow water benthic communities in the fiord Comao are studied with focus on cold-water corals. The investigations are carried out at Huinay Scientific Field Station.

Gunter CV Phd Thesis ProyectIn a first phase, a novel method for inventory and reproducible characterization of benthic communities will be developed and applied. The method combines tried and tested procedures from terrestrial plant sociology (Braun-Blanquet) with modern techniques for benthic research like SCUBA-diving and digital underwater photography. The method will be designed for application on a broad spectrum of benthic communities. It allows a rapid asessment procedure for large areas as well as a reproducible detailed analysis of benthic communities and a combination of both. The results will provide information about benthic biodiversity in the northern Chilean fiord region. This phase of the project is integrated in the Census of Marine Life and the NaGISA project. In a second phase, basic abiotic constants will be recorded at selected communities and variable factors will be monitored during an entire year cycle. Key factors molding these communities shall be detected, which allow conclusions on dynamics within these communities and the reasons for high diversity in the fiords.
